Jiji Press WASHINGTON (Jiji Press) — Japan and the United States restarted working-level trade talks in Washington on Tuesday, focusing on agricultural products and automobiles.

The focal point of the talks is whether U.S. negotiators will make concessions on Tokyo’s demand that Washington remove or reduce tariffs on imports of automobiles and other industrial products from Japan, sources familiar with the situation said.

At ministerial talks earlier this month, the U.S. side is believed to have agreed to accelerate discussions on the auto sector. Talks have so far focused on Washington’s request that Tokyo allow greater U.S. access to Japan’s market for beef and other agricultural products. Washington is concerned that U.S. farmers are at a competitive disadvantage after Japan lowered its agricultural tariffs on other members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free trade pact from which the United States withdrew.
