Iran: Britain may soon release seized tanker – NHK WORLD

A senior Iranian maritime official says Britain may soon release an Iranian oil tanker that was seized last month off the British Mediterranean territory of Gibraltar.
Iran’s state-run news agency reported remarks by the deputy head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization on Tuesday.
The official reportedly said Britain is thinking of freeing the Iranian tanker and the two countries have exchanged documents to pave the way for its release.
The official is also quoted as saying Iran hopes the issue will be resolved in the near future and the tanker can continue sailing with the country’s national flag.
The authorities in Gibraltar said in a statement they are seeking to de-escalate the situation, but they did not mention the possible release of the Iranian ship.
The Iranian tanker was detained on July 4 on suspicion of transporting oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions.
A British-flagged oil tanker was seized on July 19 by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Persian Gulf.
