The US government says it will delay a planned tariff increase on about 550 items imported from China.

The Office of the US Trade Representative had said it would impose an additional tariff of 10 percent on 300 billion dollars’ worth of Chinese imports starting September 1.

On Tuesday, the office announced the measure was being delayed to December 15 for certain items, such as smartphones, PCs and some clothing, shoes and toys.

US business leaders had hit back at higher tariffs on many daily necessities, saying they would affect US companies and consumers alike.

US President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday the tariff hike delay is for the Christmas season “just in case they might have an impact” on shoppers.

But the additional tariff will be imposed as scheduled on the more than 3,000 remaining items, as the US steps up pressure on China for a deal.
