Russia slams Japan over map with disputed islands – NHK WORLD

Russia’s foreign ministry has criticized Japan over a map that shows four Russian-controlled islands as Japanese territories.
The map is found on the official website of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, showing routes for the Olympic torch relay across Japan.
Russia controls the islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan’s territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.
On Friday, Russian Foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told reporters that Japan’s action could “poison” a proper atmosphere that Russia is trying to create to resolve complicated issues at the request of Japan.
Last month, Russia lodged a protest with Tokyo for marking the four Russian-held islands as Japanese territories in a video created for the G20 summit in Osaka.
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited Etorofu Island, one of the four disputed islands, on August 2. He stressed that Russia will continue to develop the island as its territory.
Japanese officials expressed deep regret over the Russian prime minister’s visit, saying it goes against Japan’s consistent position on the islands.
