A survey shows that the percentage of Americans with unfavorable views of China is at its highest level since the poll started asking the question 14 years ago.

Pew Research Center conducted the survey in May and June, covering 1,503 adults in the United States. The results were released on Tuesday.

Sixty percent of the respondents reported an unfavorable opinion of China, up 13 percentage points from last year, and the highest level since the survey started including the question in 2005.

China was also named by 24 percent of the respondents as the country or group that poses the greatest threat to the US in the future. The figure is up five percentage points and tied with Russia.

The research center cited US-China trade tensions and Beijing’s military expansion as the underlying factors of worsening public sentiment toward China.

In a section on world leaders, the survey listed Japan’s Shinzo Abe, India’s Narendra Modi, China’s Xi Jinping and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. It asked the respondents how much confidence they have in each of the leaders “to do the right thing regarding world affairs.” Possible responses were “Confidence,” “No confidence” and “Don’t know.”

Sixty-one percent reported having confidence in Abe, while 37 percent said they have confidence in Xi.

Only nine percent of Americans said they have confidence in Kim, in sharp contrast to positive phrases often used by President Donald Trump in describing his ties with the North Korean leader.
