Officials in Aichi Prefecture have filed a complaint with the police after receiving hundreds of threatening emails about an international art festival. The Aichi Triennale Arts Festival opened on August 1. The prefectural office received threatening phones and emails about a section that featured a statue of a girl symbolizing those referred to as wartime comfort women. The Aichi governor, who chairs the organizing committee, announced on August 3 that the exhibit would be removed to allow people to view the event safely. A man was arrested on August 7 on suspicion of sending a threat by fax. Prefectural officials said on Wednesday that they had received 770 threatening emails between August 5 and 9. They said these included threats to shoot officials and to use gasoline to set fire to the prefecture’s facilities and schools. The officials say some of the threats used the same wording.
